After making his mark in 2017 with a mesmerising Colors Berlin performance, Toby Corton returns with new single 'My Religion' and it's timely, sophisticated soul at its finest.
Retro jazz chords, lively drums and hazy rolling keys provide the canvas for Corton's sharp lyricism which takes aim at Mike Pence's abhorrent belief in gay conversion therapy. One could be forgiven for thinking that songwriting inspiration of this form could manifest into lyrics full of anger, yet Corton delivers his narrative with intelligence, charm and eloquence, three words that are seldom used to describe the US Vice President.
While the record oozes influences from the past, his undeniably British vocals keep the track firmly planted in the 21st century with a sound that's satisfyingly impossible to pigeonhole.
If you're as much of a fan as we are make sure you catch him at The Windmill in Brixton on November 29th. Get your tickets here.
