On January 10th 2018 four of the UK's most exciting emerging jazz artists will be touching down in New York for the first ever BBC Music Introducing and PRS Foundation showcase at the Winter Jazzfest. Hosted by Gilles Peterson, the artists representing the UK's thriving jazz scene will be Nubya Garcia, Oscar Jerome, The Comet Is Coming and Yazz Ahmed. Here's all you need to know about the future stars.
When we think of the London jazz scene Nubya Garcia is one of the very first artists to spring to mind. Her brand of afro-tinged jazz is simply everywhere we listen, from her own projects with Nerija and Maisha, to collaborations with other big names in the Jazz scene such as Moses Boyd and Blue Lab Beats. Her recent sold out debut album 'Nubyas 5ive' cemented her position as one of the torch bearers of the thronging UK scene and won her the award of Breakthrough Act of the Year at the 2017 Jazz FM Awards. We've seen her live ourselves and trust us, it's electric.
With a sound that's impossible to pigeonhole within a single genre, Oscar Jerome has been making a name for himself in the UK jazz scene since the release of his highly acclaimed debut EP in 2016. Having reached the final of Glastonbury's Emerging Talent competition this year as well as selling out a number of recent London shows, this is an artist who has momentum on their side. His latest release 'Subdued' made it into our top 20 tracks of the year and his live show at Servant Jazz Quarters was one of our favourite gigs of 2017, you simply must see him live.
The Comet Is Coming
With a 2016 Mercury Nomination under their belts, this three piece band have built up somewhat of a cult following for their high octane live performances and cosmic psychedelic jazz sound. Their latest album 'Channel The Spirits' received critical acclaim and The Guardian described them as 'taking jazz to the outer limits.' Prepare yourself for a memorable show.
Bahraini trumpeter and composer Yazz Ahmed has played with everyone from recent Glastonbury headliners Radiohead to the legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Her highly acclaimed second album 'La Saboteuse' saw her cement herself as one of the UK's most forward thinking artists as she drew on her heritage to explore the possibilities of Arabian Jazz. With glowing reviews from the likes of The Guardian and Time Out Magazine, the Winter Jazzfest is sure to be another step towards a very bright future.
The showcase will take place at Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street on Wednesday 10 January 2018 with the doors opening at 6.00pm.
